Inside Dubai’s EV Green Charger Initiative: Transforming Mobility

Dubai’s journey toward sustainable transport is being shaped by the ambitious Green Charger Initiative, led by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). Launched in line with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to build one of the smartest and happiest cities in the world, the programme focuses on creating a robust public charging backbone that makes electric vehicles a practical everyday choice.

When the Green Charger Initiative first began, Dubai installed 100 public charging units at carefully selected locations such as government facilities, commercial areas and key public destinations. This early network helped reduce range anxiety and signalled that the emirate was serious about electric mobility. Today, the system has grown substantially, with more than 400 charging stations capable of serving around 740 EVs at the same time, supporting residents, visitors and fleet operators.

A defining feature of the initiative is its digital intelligence. Each EV Green Charger is connected to a central Charge Point Management System (CPMS), enabling DEWA to monitor performance, manage loads and optimize availability. For drivers, the experience is streamlined: they can view charger locations and status, start or stop sessions and access their account through the DEWA smart app, website and several integrated digital platforms. QR code activation at the station adds another layer of convenience.

The Green Charger Initiative is also designed with the future in mind. DEWA is exploring advanced technologies such as ultra-fast charging for high-utilization fleets, mobile charging units that can be deployed flexibly, and inductive charging solutions that could eventually allow vehicles to charge without cables. These innovations aim to keep Dubai aligned with global best practices while supporting its wider clean-energy and smart-city strategies.
