Abu Dhabi’s Big EV Push: What 1,000 New EV Chargers Mean for Drivers

Drivers in Abu Dhabi will soon have far more options to power their electric vehicles, thanks to the launch of 1,000 new EV chargers across the Emirate. The announcement, made by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), marks one of the region’s boldest investments yet in clean transportation and smart infrastructure.

In its initial rollout, EV chargers will be placed at 400 strategic destinations, from bustling Abu Dhabi Island to Al Ain and the Al Dhafra region. The program is being delivered through public-private partnerships, where selected operators will not only install the EV  chargers but also handle their operation and upkeep.

All EV chargers will run under the new umbrella brand “Charge AD”, with simple, standardised tariffs: AED 0.70 per kilowatt-hour for AC charging and AED 1.20 per kilowatt-hour for fast DC charging. Officials believe transparent pricing will give EV owners greater confidence and encourage more people to make the switch from petrol to electric.

Momentum is already building. The Emirate counted over 15,000 EVs registered in the first quarter of 2025, a 60% jump compared with the previous year. By expanding the charging network now, Abu Dhabi is tackling one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption – reliable access to charging points. The authority has also pledged to expand the network year after year as demand continues to grow.

What sets this project apart is its reach. Beyond highways and residential areas, EV chargers will also be installed at malls, hotels, and other high-footfall venues, creating a user-friendly ecosystem that supports both daily commuters and visiting tourists.

“By leveraging AI-driven systems and advanced technology, we’re laying the foundation for a cleaner and more connected mobility network,” explained Dr Abdulla Hamed Al Ghfeli, Acting Director General of Abu Dhabi Mobility.

Driving the Future Forward

The deployment of 1,000 new EV chargers is more than just an infrastructure upgrade – it’s a signal that Abu Dhabi is serious about reshaping urban mobility. It opens the door for forward-thinking EV charger suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers to play a role in this transformation.
